What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders that if left untreated can cause damage to the optic nerve resulting in vision loss and even blindness. The disease generally occurs when fluid builds up in the front part of the eye, increasing the pressure of the eye and damaging the optic nerve. Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness for people over 60 years old. Glaucoma, for the most part, is asymptomatic.

How Is Glaucoma Prevented?

The best way to prevent glaucoma damage is to make regular eye exams with your eye doctor. For ages 40-54, have an eye exam every two to four years. For ages 55 to 64, it’s recommended that you have an eye exam every one to two years. Once you’ve turned 65, You should schedule an eye exam every year.
