How To Ensure Your Child’s Eye Safety During Sports Season

Spring is finally here, and Opening Day has come and gone. If you’re a parent to a young athlete, ensuring their safety throughout sports season is of the utmost concern. April is recognized as Sports Eye Safety Month by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Discover four simple ways that you can protect your child’s eyes this season.

Protective Eyewear

If your child wears eyeglasses or contacts, consider upgrading to prescription eyewear designed specifically for sports. Athletic goggles and eyewear are made to prevent damage to your child’s face. They are also less likely to break and injure your child during a game or match.

UV Protection

Children that play outdoor, low-contact sports like golf and baseball need to protect their eyes from harmful UV rays. Protect their eyes, and purchase a pair of sunglasses with 100% UV protection. There are sunglasses designed for each different sport, so ensure that you are buying the right pair.

Safety Masks/Helmets

High contact sports require that your child wear facemasks or helmets for protection. It isn’t enough to buy a helmet or facemask for your child. You must also check to see that it fits correctly. An ill-fitting helmet can cause more harm than good.

Schedule an Eye Exam

Before your child hits this field this spring, schedule an eye exam. A person’s vision can change over time, and it’s especially important for young people to have their eyes checked annually.
