Eye Care and the Holiday Season

Every December, millions of people purchase stacks of neatly packaged presents for the ones they love. It’s the season of the consumer, after all, and this year is no different. Whether you’re shopping online or heading to the closest mall, consider the safety of your friends and family before you check out.

Safe Toys Month

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), about one in ten children’s eye injuries are caused by toys. AAO encourages people to practice caution when purchasing holiday gifts for young people. Toys with sharp edges and launch projectiles are especially dangerous and should be avoided.

Safe Celebrations Month

The AAO also suggests practicing safety when celebrating this holiday season. “Improperly aimed popping of Champagne corks is one of the most common causes of holiday-related injuries,” says a spokesperson from the AAO. To safely open a bottle of Champagne, first, place a rag or cloth over the top of the cork. Rather than applying pressure to “pop” the cork into the air, gently wiggle the cork until it comes loose. The cloth is necessary, due to the intense carbonation in Champagne.

Practice Safety While Decorating

While you deck the halls this holiday season, ensure to do so safely. Wear protective eyewear when cutting down your Christmas tree. Avoid hanging glass ornaments, as they could fall and injure your children or pets. While decorating the tree, be mindful of the branches, as you could be poked in the eye and injured.
