Winter Weather and Contact Lens Care

As the winter weather persists, East Coast residents head out to purchase shovels and salt for snow storms ahead. Not only does snow and ice make living conditions difficult, but the lack of moisture in the air can also lead to a variety of other problems. Discover how to properly care for your contact lenses this winter with the following tips.

Apply Eye Drops Everyday

Humidity levels drop during winter because cold air contains less moisture than warm air. As a result, your contacts can lose moisture faster during the dry, winter months. Use rewetting drops to maintain lubrication. If you prefer not to use rewetting drops, consider using eyeglasses during the winter.

Purchase a Humidifier

If your home or office lacks moisture, set up a humidifier and keep it running throughout the day. Adding moisture to the air will keep your eyes moist and comfortable.

Wear Sunglasses (even if it’s cloudy)

Harmful UV rays are as present during the winter as they are during the summertime. Overexposure to UV rays can lead to a variety of vision problems, including dry eye. Ensure that you’re wearing sunglasses that certified to block 100% of UVA and UVB rays.

Drink Water

Dehydration can quickly lead to dry eye. During the summer, drinking water throughout the day comes as second nature. Ensure that you maintain those habits during the winter and all year round. If you go to the gym regularly or participate in a winter sport, it’s especially important that you stay hydrated.
