May Is Healthy Vision Month!

Did you know that approximately 37 million American adults have age-related macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma? According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), only half of the adults in the United States classified as being at high risk for serious vision loss visited an eye doctor in the past year. Each month, the American Academy of Ophthalmology shines line on a certain issue for the purpose of decreasing eye disease and saving vision across America. You can celebrate Healthy Vision Month by taking the following steps:

Have A Comprehensive Dilated Eye Exam

The only way to detect eye disease early is to schedule a comprehensive dilated eye exam. During the exam, drops are placed in your eye to dilate the pupil, and your eye care professional will use a special magnifying lens to examine the retina and look for areas of damage to the eye. Talk with your eye doctor about how often you should have an eye exam.

Pursue A Healthy Lifestyle

Research has shown that living a healthy lifestyle can lower your risk of eye disease. You can take matters into your own hands by eating a healthy diet rich in essential nutrients, quitting smoking, and exercising 3-5 times a week.

Use Protective Eye Wear

Each day, about 2,000 U.S. workers have a job-related eye injury that requires medical treatment. This statistic could be drastically decreased if employees wore protective eyewear at all times. If you play sports, you can limit your risk of eye injury by wearing the appropriate protective wear for your sport.

Wear Sunglasses

Excessive exposure to UV rays can lead to eye damage such as macular degeneration and cataracts. Simply wear sunglasses that certifiably protect from UV rays whenever you spend time outdoors. You’ll limit your risk of eye disease, and you’ll look great doing it!
