Eye Safety and Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day is an opportunity to remember and honor America’s fallen heroes, and many people choose to spend the weekend with family and friends. Whether you’re traveling to the lake or your neighborhood cookout, ensure that you’re taking care of the health of your eyes. Discover how to practice eye safety this weekend and throughout summer!

Swimming

If you’re lucky enough to spend Memorial Day weekend at the pool or the beach, make sure to practice eye safety when you take a dip. Wear goggles to protect your eyes from chlorine and encourage your children to wear goggles as well. If you regularly wear contact lenses, remove them before jumping into the water.

Celebrating

The Fourth of July is still a few weeks away, but some Americans prefer to celebrate with fireworks at any chance they can get. When using sparklers, fireworks, and other forms of pyrotechnics, practice great caution. Do not allow young children to handle fireworks, and ensure that you read all directions before lighting a fuse. A great way to avoid eye injuries as a result of fireworks and firecrackers is to enlist the help of a professional.

Sports

If you’re spending the weekend playing your favorite sports, pack all of the necessary items to maintain the health of your eyes. Use protective eyewear when playing contact sports like lacrosse, and wear sunglasses to avoid the risk of UV exposure.

Grilling

Americans love to spend their holidays grilling outdoors. However, it can be a dangerous way to cook if you’re not careful. Wear appropriate clothing that is not too loose, to avoid the possibility of catching fire. Wash your hands after using lighter fluid so that you don’t rub it into your eyes. Ensure that you grill in well-lit areas to avoid other possible injuries.
