Everything You Need to Know About Astigmatism

Astigmatism is very common, occurring in about one and three people in the United States. It’s characterized as a refractive error in the eye and can lead to blurry vision. Learn more about astigmatism, and discover what you can do to correct it.

Astigmatism, Defined

According to the National Eye Institute, astigmatism occurs when the eye does not focus light evenly onto the retina. While the cornea or lens of a normal eye is shaped like a baseball, the cornea or lens of an eye with astigmatism is elongated, like a football. This imperfection of the eye causes images to appear blurry or stretched.

Risk Factors

Astigmatism can affect people of any age, from children to adults. Some people with astigmatism do not notice a change in their vision until later in life. Slight astigmatism can worsen with age, which is why it’s so important to schedule annual eye exams.

Symptoms and Signs

Patients with astigmatism often experience eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision, and even difficulty driving at night. You may already wear contact lenses or glasses and still have these issues. It’s important to share your symptoms with an eye doctor.

Correcting Astigmatism

The simplest way to correct astigmatism is to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses. In some cases, patients choose to undergo refractive surgery to change the eye shape and restore focusing power back to the eye. The decision is up to you, but only an eye doctor can recommend the best course of action.
