The Do’s and Don’ts of Firework Safety

July Fourth is just around the corner, and fireworks will soon illuminate the North American sky. If you’re planning to enjoy a pyrotechnic display with family and friends, ensure that you do so safely. Fireworks are responsible for thousands of injuries each year, and the statistic drastically increases on Independence Day. Discover how you can prevent eye injuries, and read on to learn how you can practice firework safety this summer.

Do: Respect Safety Barriers

When attending a professional fireworks display, spectators should sit at least 500 feet away. It’s important to respect safety barriers, like fences or signs, and to follow all safety rules of the organization in charge of the event.

Do Not: Purchase Fireworks for Personal Use

Licensed firework technicians aren’t only professionally trained in pyrotechnics, but they also handle authorized materials. When you purchase fireworks, whether illegally or legally, you’re putting your friends and family in immediate danger. Without the proper materials and licenses, you can easily harm yourself and others. Avoid purchasing fireworks at all costs.

Do: Wear Protective Eyewear

If you are a professional pyrotechnician, ensure that you wear the right protective eyewear this summer. If you aren’t a professional, and handling sparklers or other small fireworks, wear protective eyewear. Sparklers may seem innocent, but they can burn at 1800 degrees!

Do Not: Allow Children to Play with Fireworks

Under no circumstance should a child be allowed to handle fireworks. Children can easily suffer eye injuries and burns as a result of fireworks, and the best defense is to keep them away. Your children can still enjoy the joy of fireworks at a safe distance.
