4 Ways to Reduce the Risk of Macular Degeneration

There might not yet be a cure for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), but thankfully there are several steps you can take to reduce your risk. Learn how you can start today!

Quit Smoking

Smoking is the largest contributing risk factor for AMD. Cigarettes contain over 4,500 chemicals, and exposing your eyes to this toxicity can lead to a variety of problems, including AMD. According to the Macular Society, smokers are up to four times more likely to develop age-related macular degeneration than non-smokers.

Exercise Regularly

According to a study in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, regular exercise reduces a person’s risk of macular degeneration. You don’t have to run a 10K every day to fight off age-related diseases. Go for a walk each morning, or consider joining a gym to participate in daily group exercise. By exercising regularly, you can maintain a healthy weight and good cholesterol levels, which can reduce your risk of AMD.

Wear Sunglasses

May is finally here, and soon the sun will shine brightly every day. Whether you’re driving to the grocery store or going for a hike, ensure that you wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection. Protecting your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays will reduce your risk of multiple eye-related diseases, including macular degeneration.

Schedule Regular Eye Exams

If you’re between the ages of 45 and 60, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that you schedule a dilated eye exam every two to three years. The early stages of AMD are often asymptomatic, and only a trained doctor can spot the disease. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Schedule your next eye exam today.
