4 Tips for Safely Viewing the Total Solar Eclipse

On August 21 of this year, over 500 million people will be able to observe a solar eclipse, in partial or total form.Observers within the path of totality will have the chance to observe the total solar eclipse when the moon will completely cover the Sun and the Sun’s tenuous atmosphere. Whether you’re traveling across the country to witness the phenomenon or catching the eclipse from your backyard, ensure that you’re doing so safely.

Purchase Eclipse Glasses

The only way to look directly at the uneclipsed, or partially eclipsed, Sun is through special purpose solar filters such as eclipse glasses. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the four manufacturers that have certified their eclipse glasses include Rainbow Symphony, American Paper Optics, Thousand Oaks Optical, and TSE 17.

Do Not Remove Glasses During the Eclipse

Do not remove your eclipse glasses while glancing at the bright sun. Once the eclipse has passed, turn your head away and remove the safety glasses to avoid any possible exposure.

Do Not Take Photographs Without Professional Aid

Do not look at the Sun through a camera, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while using your eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewer. Consult expert advice from a professional before taking photographs.

Within the Path of Totality

If you’re able to witness the total solar eclipse, remove your solar filter only when the Moon completely covers the Sun’s face and darkness occurs. As soon as the Sun begins to become bright again, replace your solar viewer to glance at the remaining partial phases.
