3 Ways to Observe UV Safety Month

The Fourth of July fireworks have come and gone, which means the summer is just starting to heat up. As you plan your next big vacation, take some time to educate yourself on the dangers of excessive sun exposure. During the month of July, the American Academy of Ophthalmology reminds the public of the importance of shielding eyes from the sun’s harmful rays by promoting these helpful tips.

100% UV Blocking Sunglasses

UV radiation from the sun can increase the risk of cataracts and growths on the eye, including cancer. When choosing sunglasses, it’s important to choose a pair that blocks out 99-100% of both UVA and UVB radiation and screens 75-90% of visible light. Keep in mind that gray-colored lenses reduce light intensity without altering the color of objects, providing the most natural color vision.

Wear a Wide Brimmed Hat

A wide brimmed hat will only block about half of UV rays, but it will limit the UV rays that hit the eyes from above or around sunglasses. For the best protection, wear a wide brimmed hat with your sunglasses when the UV rays are strongest.

Find Shade

UV rays are strongest between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm, so it’s important to avoid long periods of direct sunlight at these times. If you must be outdoors, do what you can to seek as much shade as possible. This may seem like an obvious solution, but it’s important to achieve relief from UV rays. Remember that UV rays can easily pass through water. If you’re spending time in a pool, position an umbrella to cover the area you spend the most time in.
