3 Common Childhood Eye Conditions

Last week, we discussed eye exams and the vital role they play in the lives of young children. Since August is recognized as Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, it’s important to spotlight a few of the most common childhood eye conditions to raise awareness. An eye exam may be an imperative step towards maintaining a child’s eye health, but parents can go the extra mile by educating themselves on basic pediatric eye care.

Conjunctivitis

Known more commonly as “pink eye,” conjunctivitis refers to a viral, bacterial or allergic infection in the eye. Children, especially young students, are susceptible to pink eye due to their increased exposure to germs. The eye will appear red, and your child will experience an uncomfortable, itchy discharge until the condition is corrected. If you believe your child has contracted conjunctivitis, keep him home from school to avoid infecting others and send them to your eye care provider.

Chalazion

A chalazion, or stye, is a small lump that grows from the base of the eyelashes. Most styes form as a result of an infection in the hair follicle. The condition is not painful at first, but becomes incredibly uncomfortable as the chalazion grows in size. If you notice a small bump on the top or bottom of your child’s lashes, schedule an eye exam as soon as possible.

Amblyopia

Also known as “lazy eye,” amblyopia refers to an eye that has not developed normal sight. As a result, the child may experience poor vision or potentially blinding vision in one or both eyes. Amblyopia affects two of every 100 people in the United States.

If you believe your child to have amblyopia, schedule an eye exam today.
